Start Separation at Ease – Celebrating 60 Years of Eppendorf's Centrifugation Expertise

A milestone birthday to celebrate, in 1964, Eppendorf's first centrifuge saw the light of day. This heralded the beginning of a long success story.

Let's take a look back at 60 eventful years: Eppendorf Zentrifuge model 3200 - behind this somewhat inconspicuous name was a revolution for laboratories all over the world; in German, Zentrifuge simply means Centrifuge. Together with the famous Eppendorf Tube from 1963 and the piston stroke pipette from 1961, this centrifuge completed the so-called "microliter system". This made it possible to process the smallest sample volumes and revolutionized the life sciences sector. Since then, an Eppendorf centrifuge has become an integral part of laboratories, a revolutionary set of instruments in many scientific disciplines that today defines the standard in research laboratories all over the world.

Important Centrifuges at Eppendorf

1964: Zentrifuge 3200 completes the "Microliter System"

1974: Centrifuge 5413 allows centrifugation of samples for up to 30 minutes

1989: First refrigerated Eppendorf Centrifuge 5402

1996: Launch of the multipurpose Centrifuge 58xx family, which with continuous development is still successful today

2021: Eppendorf Centrifuge 5910 Ri with intuitive touch screen and advanced functions for networking and documentation

2021: Global launch and distribution of the CR22N high-speed centrifuge after the acquisition of the HIMAC centrifuge line

2022: Introduction of the Centrifuge CP-NX, and Centrifuge CS-(F)NX Series of ultra-centrifuges sets new records at Eppendorf with speeds of up to 1,050,000 ×g

2023: Centrifuge 5427 R is the first Eppendorf centrifuge with natural refrigerant

Performance and Innovation: More Than Six Decades of History

Since the introduction of the 3200 model, Eppendorf has continuously expanded its range of innovative and high-quality equipment for a wide range of applications. In addition to milestones through the introduction of important equipment to meet the constantly increasing demand, Eppendorf is constantly expanding its offering.

This includes the acquisition of the Leipzig-based centrifuge manufacturer Heinz Janetzki KG in 1991 and the acquisition of the centrifuge division of the Japanese company Koki Holdings Co., Ltd., whose products are sold internationally under the Himac brand, in 2020. As a result, Eppendorf has also been able to gain innovative strength and in recent years, for example, has launched the intuitively operated Centrifuge 5910 Ri with touch screen and the Centrifuge 5427 R with more sustainable coolant.

Towards the Future Backed by a Strong Tradition

Today's centrifuges no longer have much in common with the first device from 1964, the Zentrifuge 3200 was still quite simple with a fixed speed and only one dial for selecting the running time. Current devices offer an ergonomic operating concept with a wide range of options and follow high safety standards. Refrigerated centrifuges also have elaborate temperature management to protect your sensitive samples from heat. The maxim of Eppendorf product development is to exceed customer expectations.

Over the years, Eppendorf has not only written an impressive success story but has also had a significant impact on the way research and science are conducted. The precision, reliability, and intuitive handling embodied by each Eppendorf centrifuge have helped enable breakthrough discoveries and scientific advances in numerous disciplines. The future will certainly be exciting and challenging. With this in mind, Happy Birthday, and here's to many more successful years!
