Description
Isolate and enumerate yeasts and molds from a wide variety of foodstuffs with ready-to-use Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Rose Bengal Chloramphenicol Agar. The neutral pH of the medium and the presence of selective agent chloramphenicol helps to suppress the bacterial growth, allowing molds and yeasts to grow. Rose Bengal in the medium is taken up by mold and yeast colonies assisting the enumeration of small colonies1. Rose Bengal also controls the size and height of mold colonies preventing the overgrowth, resulting in improved enumeration and detection.

The choice of a suitable medium for enumeration of yeasts and molds is greatly dependent on the nature of the foodstuffs under investigation and the organisms that occur on them2. Rose-Bengal Chloramphenicol Agar is recommended for fresh proteinaceous foods whose associated flora consists mainly of Gram-negative rod-shaped bacteria, although it should be noted that chloramphenicol alone may not be sufficient to inhibit the bacterial background. Because of the stability of chloramphenicol, Rose-Bengal Chloramphenicol Agar is also suitable when higher and prolonged incubation temperatures around 35°C are required.
