Description
When reacting with bases, the compound forms carbonates. When reacting with carboxyl groups, it gives a fast-forming and effervescent carbon dioxide formation. Its many uses include:
- Remove or washes acidic impurities from a crude liquid to yield a purer sample
- To test for the presence of carboxylic groups in proteins
- Decreases serum potassium levels, as well as increases blood pH and bicarbonate concentration
- Decreases the duration of a peripheral nerve block in rats when added to Lidocaine
- Effective way of controlling fungus growth
- When mixed with water, can be used as an antacid
- Used as a leavening agent in cooking and baking (CO2 release causes expansion of the batter and forms the characteristic texture and grain in baked and fried foods)
