Description

Description

Protein Serine/Threonine Kinase MAPKAPK5 (mitogen-activated protein kinase activated protein kinase 5), also known as p38-regulated/activated protein kinase (PRAK), functions downstream of p38a and p38b in mediating signaling of the p38 pathway. This kinase can be activated in response to cellular stress and proinflammatory cytokines through its phosphorylation by MAP kinases including MAPK1/ERK, MAPK14/p38-alpha, and MAPK11/p38-beta. MAPKAPK5 is localized predominantly in the cytoplasm and is constantly shuttled between the cytoplasm and the nucleus. MAPKAPK5 may play a role in balancing other MAPK pathways because overactivation of MAPKAPK5 can inhibit Ras mediated cell proliferation and gene activation. MAPKAPK5 inhibtion may facilitate cell differentiation, inflammation and cell proliferation.

EMBL AF032437. Protein is R291E with respect to this accession. This conflict is reported inGenBank AI300977, AL556217 and BI495728.
